La Grecia è qui
A letter from Sardinia: a report on crisis, work and unemployment.

“Greece is here. Letter from Sardinia,” the powerful and provocative 2012 investigative report co-directed by Pietro Mereu and journalist Mimmo Lombezzi, broadcast on Mediaset within the program Storie di confine (Rete 4).
La Grecia è qui looks at crisis and unemployment in Sardinia, building a Mediterranean bridge between local experience and a wider condition.
While Europe watches Athens’ economic collapse with bated breath, the real “Greece” is much closer than it appears. Filmed in 2012 in the midst of the island’s economic crisis, “Greece is Here. Letter from Sardinia” is a raw and timely investigative report that draws a ruthless parallel between the Greek financial tragedy and the industrial and social suffocation of Sardinia.
The documentary focuses closely on the historic and desperate protests in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, led by miners and metalworkers willing to do whatever it takes to defend their future. Combining the investigative journalism of Mimmo Lombezzi with the deep anthropological sensitivity of Pietro Mereu, the film opens with a powerful “video-letter” addressed to mainland Italy. By looking past mainstream news headlines, it exposes the bleak reality of joblessness, shuttered factories, and the growing sense of isolation on an island facing social bankruptcy—serving as a stark mirror for the contradictions of the entire eurozone.
Project Statement:
“We wanted to prove that austerity measures and reckless deindustrialization were not issues confined to foreign nations. The Sardinia of 2012 stood as the Italian outpost of that exact same economic crisis.”
