A Continent Called Sardinia (Un continente chiamato Sardegna)
The anthropological and identity-driven cinema of Pietro Mereu
Sardinia is not just an island; it is an entire microcosm, an isolated world so diverse and unique that it has historically been described as “almost a continent.” Taking inspiration from this profound cultural concept, director Pietro Mereu has centered much of his cinematic work on the scientific, human, and social exploration of his homeland.
Under the thematic umbrella of “A Continent Called Sardinia,” Mereu’s camera pushes past the postcard-perfect imagery of mass tourism to map the island’s unique biological and social landscapes. From the community and genetic secrets of global longevity hotspots in “The Centenarians’ Club”, through the evocative and archaic rituals of “Sonaggios”, to raw social portraits of marginalization and resilience like “The Sea Urchin Divers’ Clan”. This cinematic journey captures the sharp contrasts, fierce pride, and deep-rooted soul of a people determined to preserve their identity, living in what truly feels like a floating continent in the heart of the Mediterranean.
Director’s Vision:
“Sardinia cannot be measured by standard geographical standards. Every valley, every village in Barbagia or Ogliastra holds ancient codes, languages, and wisdom. Documenting it means committing to explore an infinite human continent.”
“A documentary is something more. It exists to shed light on the world’s shadowed places.”Pietro Mereu← All works
