The Centenarians’ Club (Il Club dei Centenari)

A documentary film by Pietro Mereu

Hidden deep within the mountainous heart of Sardinia’s Alta Ogliastra lies the highest concentration of centenarians in the world. “The Centenarians’ Club” is a compelling documentary short that investigates this extraordinary demographic milestone, exploring one of the planet’s five official Blue Zones. Born in the region, director Pietro Mereu travels across remote villages like Lanusei, Villagrande, Arzana, and Baunei to decode the secrets of an exceptionally long life.

Moving past traditional wellness clichés, the film hands the microphone directly to the protagonists: incredibly sharp elders who recount long lives built on rural farming, shepherding, and a clean diet of goat’s milk, homemade sourdough bread, and local wine. Supported by the scientific insights of Dr. Gianni Pes—the epidemiologist who originally discovered the phenomenon—Mereu proves that the true elixir of youth is not a magic potion, but a powerful combination of DNA, zero-mile nutrition, and the profound emotional and social respect that these communities reserve for their oldest members.

Director’s Statement (Pietro Mereu):

“This film marked the beginning of my long cinematic journey into longevity. I wanted to understand why people in my homeland aged so beautifully. What I found is that our centenarians are not just a biological miracle; they are the living guardians of a rural civilization centered around human connection and community respect.”
